This spring, study philosophy with Free Minds
Big news! This January we are launching a cycle of spring classes for Free Minds graduates, similar to the alumni classes we piloted in 2009-10. We hope that each spring semester alumni will have the opportunity to take a credit-bearing ACC class that’s designed around the principles of Free Minds.
The Spring 2012 class will be Introduction to Philosophy with Dr. Matthew Daude Laurents, who taught in Free Minds from 2006 to 2009 and visited in 2010-11. He’s chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at ACC and a hilarious, high-energy, and challenging professor.
Introduction to Philosophy — PHIL 1301 — meets the ACC core curriculum requirement in Humanities, so if you haven’t completed your six hours in that area, this will earn you the additional three credit hours you need for your degree. (Your Free Minds class will have earned you the other three.)
The class will be held on Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 8:50 at the Community Engagement Center at 1009 East 11th Street. We’ll provide books for free and, if there is enough demand, offer on-site child care. This is a great opportunity to work with an inspiring professor in a supportive and engaging environment and to continue working toward your degrees.
Sound like fun? Here’s what you need to sign up:
Since this is an alumni class, you will be responsible for covering the tuition for the class through financial aid or other means. So the first step is to make sure you’re set to register at ACC and have your financial aid or payment lined up. If you need help with that, contact ACC advisor Lauren Gage at 223-6202 or via email.
In order to enroll in the class you’ll need to be “complete” in reading and writing at ACC, meaning you have passed the TCOM reading and writing tests or fulfilled that requirement in another way. Also, if you haven’t already, you’ll need to be working through the math sequence.
Priority at registration is given to Free Minds graduates, so you’ll have to work through our office to get registered. Call us at 232-6093 to put your name on the list and tell us about child care and other needs. We’ll then let you know the next step you need to take to get registered.
Hope to see you this spring!
